Applied Biostatistics for Clinical Research

Start/End date: 17 Feb – 06 May 2021

OVERVIEW

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course aims to introduce commonly used biostatistics methods in medical research and provide hands-on training on performing statistical analysis. The course covers a wide range of data organization and statistical techniques and assumes no prior knowledge of statistics and statistical software. It will enable clinical researchers to perform a basic-to-intermediate level of statistical analysis using the Stata software and interpret their results appropriately.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is strongly recommended for doctors, medical and life science researchers and professionals who are keen on learning the fundamentals of biostatistics and performing statistical analyses by themselves. The prerequisites include basic knowledge of clinical research, including randomized control trials and observational studies. No prior experience with data analysis is required, but participants should be prepared for challenges and to devote time to learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand various types of variables and data structure

• Prepare analysis-ready datasets

• Performing statistical data review and identifying data issues

• Apply commonly used statistical methods for numerical, binary, and time-to-event outcomes on their own data and interpret results

• Check statistical assumptions for various methods

• Prepare publication-ready graphs

• Do statistical programming (coding) in Stata

• Learn to use third-party written macro packages for special statistical techniques

• Good statistical reporting practices
