OVERVIEW

This is a 3-day foundational course, designed especially for doctors across all settings. This course covers the basic principles and practice of palliative medicine. The trainers in this course include experienced doctors, nurses and allied health professionals from the palliative care field. They will cover a comprehensive range of palliative care topics through interactive lectures, case discussions and role play activities. The aim is to build / increase professional confidence and competence in participants by equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to work with patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses. Some of the topics covered within this course include an introduction to palliative care, pain and symptom management, communication with patients and families, ethical dilemmas, dealing with psychological problems and use of existing hospice services in Singapore

This is a blended learning course where participants will be able to access mini-presentations, assessments and other resources via a web-based learning management system. The self-study done online will be supplemented by interactive face-to-face sessions on all three days. Course participants will also have unique opportunities to visit patients with the homecare team and to discuss the most appropriate case management strategies with paliative care specialists. This enables experiential learning in authentic situations where palliative care is practiced locally.
